ADDRESSING THE NEED FOR BRIEFER CVs

Given the enormous competition in the job market, recruiters are usually swamped with CVs each time a position is advertised. Most of them don’t have time to wade through multi-paged CVs, not to mention copies of certificates and references. Have you noticed the increase in ads which ask for brief CVs, or more specifically, two-page or even one page CVs? At the same time though, your CV must contain all the information the recruiter needs to know.

The trick then is to put together a CV that is brief yet informative. It must also be arresting enough to stand out from the others and compel the recruiter want to find out more about you and what you have to offer.

COMMENTS

"Lee Currie's Booklet is an attempt to educate applicants to strive to be precise and concise in their written approach to a company, whether they are school-leavers or already have years of experience. She has obviously been exposed to the style and format of CVs and resumes in North America, and we are fortunate that she brings this expertise to the South African labour market. All prospective job applicants will benefit from her research."

"Hopefully this booklet will give career seekers the correct guidelines on how to submit a brief CV - no more "books" sent in please! The comments on how to prepare for an interview are particularly welcome. I believe this book will not only assist the job seeker, but future employers too."

Linda Milne, HR Director

"Times are very tough for job seekers today- even tougher for students and school leavers who have no work experience.

Many employers have become accustomed to receiving literally hundreds of responses to an advertised vacancy and this has allowed them to be highly selective. They're also very busy people with little time to read lengthy CVs, references, certificates and other attachments which applicants so often send.
In keeping with the changing market place the need is for a CV which reflects your skills and abilities briefly and concisely and at the same time gives the employers the information they need, practically at a glance.

Through CVs The New Way, I'll show you how to put together such a CV and help you to prepare yourself for the job market. I hope that you enjoy reading it and that you will put it to good use.

Good luck in your search!"

NO WORK EXPERIENCE?

The good news is that even if you’re straight out of college or high school, with a little initiative, you can put together a very acceptable CV based on your school and university activities and any part time work you may have done.

Obviously it won’t be as ‘full’ as the CV of a person with loads of work experience but you may surprise yourself as to what you have to offer once you go through your history.

A good CV is also useful if you’re still studying and looking for part time or holiday employment.

THE INTERVIEW: PLANNING IS EVERYTHING

Well done – You’ve landed your first Interview.

Careful planning can make all the difference when it comes to a successful interview. Most importantly, you need to be organized. Rushing around at the last minute will make you hot and flustered.

By planning ahead you’re more likely to stay cool, confident and in control. In CVs the New Way you'll learn how.
